Along with Randy Houser and the other gentleman that performed one of the best concerts I’ve been to yet! Completely sold out STL!!! Amazing.1, serving notice that Johnson was a full-blown country star, one who made it the hard way - his way. 2019's Ain't Nothin' to It, his first album for a major label, went all the way to No. 2, there was no denying Johnson's emergence as a major force in country music. Remaining resolutely DIY, he nevertheless started sneaking into the upper rungs of the country album charts in 2014 with Cowboy Like Me. Johnson released his first album in 2006, and years of hard work slogging it out on the road night after night helped him grow his audience bigger and bigger. The band he put together, which initially included his dad, started small, and gradually built up a hardy, grassroots following. The East Texas singer and songwriter actually started out as a rodeo bull rider (which eventually led to his song "Dear Rodeo"), but over time his path led him to music. He's an artist who doesn't do anything halfway.Ĭody Johnson's journey is the kind of success story that gives you faith in the American dream, not to mention the verities of country music. Whether he's delivering a heartfelt take on a tune by one of his heroes or one of his own compositions, the one thing you can count on is 100 percent commitment from Johnson. And when he launches into a medley of the classic country tunes that inspired his no-nonsense approach, including songs by Garth Brooks, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, you can really get a full picture of what makes Johnson tick. Backed by the band that's helped him build his grassroots following one crowd at a time, the road warrior digs into some of his most widely loved tunes, like "On My Way to You" and "Nothin' on You" as well as deeper cuts from all across his career. But from the way he tells it, that's really the only way he can operate. Country troubadour Cody Johnson puts as much effort into making his concerts a straight-from-the-heart experience as he does with his recordings. ![]()
